But do I really need a skimmer?
The short answer is no. However, that's a tough question, one that will be debated to the end of time. Without going into the volumes of information on the subject, the important part is removing excess nutrients from your system. Most people do this with skimmers because they're relatively easy and very efficient. Some people believe that skimmers strip good things from the water too, though, so they use plants to absorb the nutrients. Frequent water changes are another way, although its easy to fall behind on and have the problem with excess nutrients creep up suddenly.

How you remove the nutrients is not important though. What is important is having a system to remove the quanity of excess nutrients your aquarium produces. Without it, you will be constantly fighting problems with your aquarium.
